One of the most common questions we hear from customers is: do cooling sheets actually work? It is a fair question, because the bedding market is packed with products claiming to keep you cool, and most of them are not being straight with you about how they do it.
The short answer is: yes, cooling sheets work. But most of them are not cooling you the way you think. Here is what actually matters, and how to choose the right sheets for your sleep environment.
Why You Overheat at Night
Your core body temperature naturally drops during sleep as part of your circadian rhythm. When that process gets interrupted, you wake up. Heat trapped by your mattress, your bedding, or your sleep environment forces your body to work harder to regulate temperature instead of staying in deep, restorative sleep.
According to Sleep Foundation, the ideal bedroom temperature for sleep is between 65 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit. But your sheets create a microclimate right against your skin that can be significantly warmer, especially if they trap heat or moisture.
Research published in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology found that skin temperature and heat dissipation during sleep directly influence sleep quality, with poor heat release correlating to more nighttime awakenings and reduced deep sleep.

Chemical treatments: Phase-change materials or proprietary cooling agents are applied to synthetic fabrics to absorb body heat on contact. Real cooling is physics, not chemistry. The factors that determine how cool a sheet actually sleeps are:
Fiber type: Natural fibers like cotton and linen are inherently breathable because of their molecular structure. They wick moisture away from the skin and allow it to evaporate, which creates a cooling effect. Polyester and microfiber do not do this.
Weave structure: A looser, more open weave allows more air to circulate between your skin and the fabric. This is why percale cotton sleeps cooler than sateen, and why linen sleeps cooler than most cottons.
Thread count: Higher thread count does not mean cooler. It often means a denser weave with less airflow. A percale sheet at 200 thread count can sleep significantly cooler than a sateen at 800.
Chemical-free construction: Organic fibers without chemical treatments breathe better and last longer. The cooling properties are built into the fiber itself, not applied as a coating.
