Why Organic Wool Is the Safer Flame Retardant — And What's Really in Your Conventional Mattress

Every mattress sold in the United States must meet federal flammability standards under 16 CFR Part 1633. That requirement is legitimate — a mattress fire is a serious hazard, and the regulation saves lives. What is not always disclosed is how manufacturers meet that standard, and what the materials they use to do it are doing to the people sleeping on them.

The answer, for most conventional mattresses, involves a short list of materials that each carry their own set of documented health concerns. The alternative — organic wool — achieves the same flame resistance through a completely different mechanism, with none of the chemical inputs. Understanding the difference matters, especially for families with children, pregnant women, or anyone spending significant time in contact with their sleep surface.

How Conventional Mattresses Pass Flame Tests

Fiberglass barriers: The most widely used flame retardant solution in budget-to-mid-range foam mattresses is a fiberglass sock or barrier layer woven into the mattress cover. Fiberglass creates a physical barrier that smothers flames when exposed to heat. It is inexpensive and effective. It is also a problem.

When the mattress cover is removed — for washing, for inspection, or if it tears — fiberglass particles are released into the air and onto bedding, carpeting, and skin. These particles are microscopic glass fibers that cause skin irritation, eye irritation, and respiratory issues when inhaled. The EPA classifies glass wool fibers as a possible carcinogen and has documented the respiratory risks associated with airborne exposure. Consumer complaints about fiberglass contamination from mattress covers have resulted in thousands of reports to the CPSC, with affected households describing particles that settled on furniture and clothing throughout entire rooms.

Most mattress brands that use fiberglass barriers specifically warn consumers never to remove the outer cover. That warning is printed in fine text. The fiberglass itself is rarely disclosed in product listings at all.

Chemical flame retardant sprays and treatments: A second category of conventional flame retardant involves chemical compounds applied to foam or fabric. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were the industry standard for decades and are now classified by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences as endocrine disruptors associated with thyroid disruption, reproductive harm, and developmental effects in children. While many PBDE formulations have been phased out in the U.S., the replacement compounds, including organophosphate flame retardants, carry their own concerns. Research published in Environmental Health Perspectives found that replacement flame retardants have similar endocrine-disrupting properties to the compounds they replaced, with measurable effects on hormone signaling at household exposure levels.

Antimony trioxide: Used as a synergist in some flame retardant systems, antimony trioxide is listed by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as a possible human carcinogen. It is present in some mattress textiles and fire barrier systems without consumer-facing disclosure.

How Organic Wool Works as a Flame Retardant

Wool is naturally flame resistant. This is not a marketing claim — it is a structural property of the fiber itself, and it is one of the reasons wool has been used in protective clothing, aircraft interiors, and building insulation for over a century.

Wool fibers have a high nitrogen and moisture content that makes them inherently difficult to ignite. When exposed to a flame, wool chars rather than melts or drips. It creates a self-insulating char layer that slows combustion without spreading flame. When the flame source is removed, wool self-extinguishes. The Woolmark Company's documentation on wool and fire details the specific combustion properties that give wool its natural flame resistance, including its Limiting Oxygen Index of 25.2%, meaning it requires more oxygen than is present in normal air to sustain combustion.

In a certified organic mattress, a layer of organic wool batting is used as the fire barrier. It meets federal flammability standards without fiberglass, without chemical sprays, without antimony trioxide, and without any of the synthetic compound families associated with endocrine disruption or respiratory harm.

What to Look For and What to Ask

When evaluating any mattress for flame retardant materials, ask these specific questions:

Does this mattress contain a fiberglass barrier or sock? What happens if the cover is removed? What flame retardant system is used — and is it wool, or a chemical treatment? What certifications does the mattress carry, and do those certifications test for flame retardant chemical residues?

GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) and GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) certifications cover the organic sourcing of materials but do not independently certify flame retardant systems. MADE SAFE certification goes further, screening finished products for known toxic chemicals including flame retardants. Greenguard Gold certification limits chemical emissions but does not prohibit all synthetic flame retardants.

The simplest standard: if a mattress is made with GOTS-certified organic wool as its fire barrier, the flame retardant question is answered. The federal standard is met, no chemical inputs are required, and there is no fiberglass present in any layer.

Eight hours a night, every night, is not the time for fine print. The flame retardant question is one worth asking before you buy.
