The non-toxic mattress category has a marketing problem. The word "organic" appears on a large number of products that contain polyurethane foam with an organic cotton cover stitched over it. "Natural" is applied to mattresses with synthetic flame retardant systems and petroleum-based adhesives. "Clean" means whatever the brand decides it means on a given day.
This is not a balanced roundup of options. It is a straightforward explanation of what actually constitutes a non-toxic organic mattress, what we built, and why we do not make a version that cuts corners on the materials that matter.
What "Non-Toxic Organic" Actually Requires
A genuinely non-toxic organic mattress requires all of the following, not some of them:
Natural organic latex -- sourced from rubber trees, free from the synthetic chemicals and petroleum compounds found in foam alternatives. The latex itself should be free from pesticide residues and VOC-generating compounds throughout the finished material.
Organic wool as the natural flame barrier -- replacing chemical flame retardants (fiberglass, PBDEs, organophosphates) with the inherent flame resistance of organic wool. No fiberglass. No chemical spray. No disclosure-in-fine-print.
Organic cotton for the cover -- grown without synthetic pesticides, finished without formaldehyde-releasing agents or PFAS coatings.
No polyurethane foam in any layer -- including transitional layers, comfort layers, or any component described with language like "plant-based foam" or "bio-foam," both of which still contain petroleum-derived polyurethane as their base material.
No synthetic adhesives -- layers tufted or otherwise mechanically secured rather than bonded with glue compounds that off-gas into the sleep environment.
No VOC off-gassing at meaningful concentrations -- verifiable through third-party testing, not a brand claim.

Construction: 10 inches total depth. The comfort layer is 1 inch of organic Dunlop latex -- responsive, contouring, and free from the VOC profile of any foam alternative. Beneath it, an 800-count individually pocketed steel coil system provides the support and spine alignment that a solid latex layer alone cannot achieve across body types. Organic cotton cover. Feel: Medium firm. Supportive without being hard. The latex has a characteristic responsiveness that foam does not -- it moves with you and returns immediately, rather than creating the pressure-point release-and-hold that memory foam is known for. Construction: 13 inches total depth. The comfort layer is 4 inches of organic Talalay latex -- the more pressure-contouring of the two primary latex types, with an open-cell structure that allows exceptional airflow through the thicker comfort layer. Beneath it, a 1,100-count 5-zone pocketed coil system provides zoned support -- firmer under the hips and lower back where alignment support is most needed, with targeted relief under the shoulders. Feel: Medium. How to Choose Between Them
Both mattresses are built to the same non-toxic organic construction standards. The choice comes down to feel preference and sleep position.
Choose the Pure if you prefer firm or medium-firm support, sleep primarily on your back or stomach, or want the baseline organic sleep experience with a 10-inch profile.
